FLARE GAS CLEANING UNIT (BENDED FLARE)

Our newest addition to the product group is the bended flare. With the bended flare unit, we are able to help you stop or minimize flaring! Flare gas is usually seen as an unwanted byproduct of oil and gas production that can only be incinerated. This flaring however, is an environmentally unfriendly process causing greenhouse gasses and polluted breathing air.
Flare gas often has different origins that required different approaches on how to handle them. The most commonly known flows of flare gas are:

  • Oil gas flow: appears at oil exploration plants during oil extraction
  • Nitrogen recovery flow: return flow of the nitrogen blanket gas stream which contains hydro carbons particles
  • Emergency/Maintenance gas: collected during maintenance activities. Polluted by all sorts of hydrocarbons.
  • Mixed Off-gas: is a mix of above flows from the refinery processes or others.

For each flow we have developed an approach that converts the gas in one or multiple useful products reducing or even stopping the need to flare.

Oil gas and nitrogen recovery gas usually have similar compositions that contain unwanted hydrocarbons making the gases not suitable for further use. They are flared off loosing valuable gas. With our own patented Sulaway® system we are able to clean these gasses with limited amount of waste and make them (re)usable again. The system is developed to remove hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide leaving clean gas and nitrogen. The sulfuric gas (H2S) is converted into acid water (H2SO4) with our bended flare application. This acid water can be used in multiple applications such as batteries. The entire system is also used for our biogas upgrading, for more information on our Sulaway® system please click here or contact our sales team.

Mixed off gas is often heavily polluted with all sorts of hydrocarbons and high contents of sulfur. Heavy hydrocarbons are difficult to separate and therefore transforming this gas into a usable product is not feasible. However, the sulfur inside the gas can be transformed into acid water with our Bended flare. The water needed for the transformation can be used from equipment water drains recycling the outgoing streams. On platforms, where water is not easily available, sweet water can be generated from seawater with special membranes. This SO2 acid water (H2SO3) can be stored in an old well or, in case of small amounts, released into the sea (according to Marpol Annex VI resolution MEPC 184(59)). Maintenance gas is only ‘produced’ during maintenance which will be a couple of times a year in mostly smaller quantities. It is therefore economically not interesting to install a special package such as Sulaway® or the Bended flare. In this case we advise to use a small gas stack which is a simple configuration of the flare. The stack usually needs purging to prevent rust formation which can hamper the functioning of the stack. In many cases methane gas is used which is a large contributor to the greenhouse effect. A more environmentally friendly alternative is to use our nitrogen generator to provide nitrogen for purging. The oxygen content in the nitrogen also enhances the flammability of the maintenance gas when burnt inside the gas stack. Interested in this solution? Check out our nitrogen generators or contact our sales team.

In some cases, the flare gas might be so heavily polluted (with other components than or high levels of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide) that recovery is not commercially interesting. Contact our sales team to discuss the options.

One responsible supplier
We can supply a full range of products, for example bended flare together with nitrogen generator. The products can be placed on one common skid where all interconnecting piping, wiring and control systems are installed by Airpack. We take full responsibility and warranty for all items installed on the package. As a customer you only need to deal with one supplier during the entire lifetime of the package (including engineering and built up in project phase).

The following is a list of the available options that can be included on our flare gas cleaning unit:

  • H2S and/or CO2 monitoring system
  • Complete control system with redundant and/or SIL certified PLC
  • Control panel with HMI for operation via keypad or touch screen
  • Stainless steel components such as process piping, control panels and instruments
  • ATEX explosion proof equipment, suitable for operation in Zone 1 or Zone 2 environment
  • Winterization enclosure, for extreme low ambient temperatures (down to -56ºC)
